Maradu residents claims alternative rehabilitation options unavailable

Though all residents agreed to vacate their flats before the set deadline of October 3, the eviction process is unlikely to be a smooth affair after flat owners claimed that alternative options, arranged by the district administration for their temporary rehab, were unavailable.

Though many tried to reach the flat owners identified by the administration to strike a deal, most of them refused the request.

Irked by the situation, residents said that they will not move out until authorities ensure their accommodation. This issue, if unresolved, can affect the deadline.

“We got a list of 521 flat owners on Sunday. When we called them, we realized that the list was prepared carelessly by officials. They said flats can’t be given on rent and nobody contacted them about the rehab plan. Some became angry after various flat owners called them. If this is the situation, how can we abandon our homes? We will not vacate our flats until the issue is resolved,” said Shamsudeen Karunagappally, chairman of Maradu Bhavana Samrakshana Samiti.

Municipality secretary Snehil Kumar Singh said there was some confusion in the list provided by taluk officials. “I will ensure that resident can reach owners of the flats identified for rehab at the earliest. We are planning to add more flats to the list,” he said.
