The proposal was put before the committee by the administration after a Gujarat high court order stated that those who lost land should be paid twice the ‘jantri’ rates as compensation.

The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) standing committee did not take a call on the proposal to give cash compensation for hundreds of houses that were razed in 2016 for road widening on three stretches in the old city.

The proposal was put before the committee by the administration after a Gujarat high court order stated that those who lost land should be paid twice the ‘jantri’ rates as compensation.

The VMC had taken up razing drives to widen the Fatehpura-Thekarnath road, Jubelibaug-Fatehpura road as well as Harankhana-Wadi road in 2016. After initially promising monetary compensation to those who lost properties, the civic body decided to give transferable development rights (TDR) as well as alternative housing to those who lost properties there.

Unhappy with the delay and not willing to accept alternate housing or TDR, some persons approached the high court and sought that they should be given cash compensation. The high court ordered in the favour of the petitioners and said that they should be given twice the ‘jantri’ rates as compensation.
