Opportunities for smart societies to get property tax waiver: Ahemdabad

News Editor

The 650-odd families of Orchid Whitefield residential society in Makarba pay roughly Rs 14.11 lakh in property taxes each year to the municipal corporation.

There is an opportunity for them, and members of other societies in the city, to save taxes under the Smart Society Incentive Scheme announced by the municipal commissioner. The corporation has set aside Rs 50 crore for the purpose.

“The conditions for tax waivers are that the societies must adhere to segregating wastes, properly manage and recycle garbage, conserve water and take other such measures like saving power and focus on greenery,” said an AMC official.

Based on these factors, the AMC will give a star rating to each society. A three-star rating will mean 25% tax waiver, 4-star rating will signify 50% waiver and a 5-star rated society will get a 100% waiver.

“We have for the first time tried to incentivize good civic practices through this scheme and hope a number of societies will come forward,” said municipal commissioner Vijay Nehra.

Senior AMC officials added that if societies which are devoid of open space for greening or waste segregation, the civic body will extend help in these situations and even offer it’s own open spaces so that members could carry out plantation drives.
